  • 12. What do I need to look for in a golf kit?

Are you a novice, a mid-level player, or an experienced golfer? To succeed at the game, golfers of all skill levels need a variety of clubs.

Purchasing golf equipment is considered one of the most challenging components of getting started with the game.

The proper gear can significantly impact your progress if you are serious about golf and want to start playing. One of the elements of playing well on the course is picking out the right golf clubs.

Less forgiving clubs are needed if your swing is good, while more forgiving club designs are better if your swing requires more work.

    1. i. The brand of the golf kit is not an important factor
To start with, pick out clubs that are suitable for your current level of play.

As a beginner, the brand does not really matter. Upon progressing and becoming a mid-level or experienced player, chances are that you will upgrade your kit. Consider your skill level before deciding what to invest in.

Golfers at the intermediate level are constantly looking to upgrade their tools. At this level, one is more aware of their needs, and can purchase any brand.

    2. ii. Type of golf clubs
It is important to understand the different golf clubs that are available. Not all golf clubs work the same.

A golf club has three components- the head, the shaft and the grip.

Golf clubs are broken down into four primary groups: putters, woods, irons, and wedges.

A modern set of golf clubs typically consists of three woods (the 1-driver, 3, and 5), at least 1 hybrid (3H) seven irons (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and PW), and a putter.

There are various sizes offered within each group as well, which is denoted by a number on the club. More strength is indicated by lower numbers, which enables you to take more shots.

      1. - Drivers/ 1 wood- "Drive for show" They are the longest and most powerful golf clubs. They are used to hit long distances.
      2. - Fairway woods- These are the 3 woods, 5 woods, 7 woods and 9 woods. They are slightly shorter than drivers and are used on the fairways. They are most frequently used during the second stroke of play, when you should be in the golf hole's fairway.
      3. - Hybrids- This is a combination of a fairwood and an iron. Ultimately "the elite of both worlds."
      4. - Irons- They are made in either graphite or steel. A standard set of irons consists of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 irons and the pitching wedge (PW).
      5. - Wedges- The category of wedges includes the pitching wedge, gap wedge, sand wedge and lob wedge.

Wedges commonly come in 48, 52, 56, 60 and 64 degree lofts. With all the available options in the market, it is important to know what you need for your game.
      6. - Putters- "Putt for dough" Used on the putting greens, for the last strokes played on a golf hole - for knocking the ball into the hole.
    3. iii. Don't start out buying top-of-the-range golf clubs- This might inhibit your game and prevent you playing your best. Consider your skill level before deciding what to invest in.
    4. iv. Shafts come in an array of variety, so choose the one that is best for you- There are shafts for both tall and short players and they equally come in different materials. Therefore, it is important to choose equipment based on these considerations. Before making this worthwhile investment, it is important to seek professional opinion.
    5. v. Budget- As a beginner, you do not have to break the bank to get your kit. Invest in what works for you at the moment. This could also mean getting a used kit as you look to improve your game.

However, it is important to ensure that the used kit is in pristine condition. Check for dents, cracks and ensure that the grips are in great condition. Remember, that it needs to be worth the investment.
    6. vi. Research!- Golf is a social capital sport that everyone should engage in, therefore, it is important for one to do their research before making any purchase.
